At
the Camp
«While hunting
the most important thing is to wine and dine the game warden»
Hunters’ wisdom
There are different ways of setting up a camp while
hunting or fishing. We’ll give examples of camp setup for different terrain
conditions, distance from roads etc.
I’ll show some photos and make short comments, but each of them merits
a novel by itself…
Kola Peninsula. The Belousikha river (a tributary
of the Voronya river, the Barents Sea is 7 km away). Never mind the “forest”, there are all of 500 sq.m. of it, and all around it are Salnaya tundra, deer,
partridges, mushrooms. berries, fish and water...finding firewood is a
drag, making dinner takes around three hours if everybody collects the “fireproof”
Karelian birches and fans the fire.
Upon arrival the first thing to do is to set up a shelter, to pitch professional mountain-climber tents, they
are light and reliable. A thick mat made of moss and birch branches goes
under every tent ... and not for nothing, on the very first night we had
around 10 cm of snow (on August 27th) and the temperature went
down to 12 below zero! We didn’t
like it at all, but the Russo-European laika stud champion Asai simply
rolled in the snow and got a kick out of that (the photo is from
dinnertime, so the snow is almost gone).
How
beautiful the tundra is in the autumn!
While the tents are being set up, everybody is out
in the field gathering firewood!
Making dinner is an important event. Right away, three double shots and ... the
hard work of tweaking and setting up all the fishing tackle (around 4 hours
on the rubber boat). Whitefish and grayling
which were hooked within half an hour and then thoroughly fried in a pan
are wonderful after a three-hour trek through the mountain pass!
Both hunting and fishing. The spaniel Gerry (a dam) is
guarding the common trophies. Finland, what of it?! Leave it alone. How great, free and vast our
country is. Russia
is our home!
Hurrah!
It’s easier to find firewood around Saint-Petersburg, and the tent is from ‘Lenta”:
There is light, security and comfort. And no need to
carry food through the mountain pass, the cars are right behind the tent,
the dinner is easier to make, because the liver of the elk “fish” is much
too big – it can’t be eaten in one sitting:
And the
cookware is more handy:
And the game wardens are “warmed up” ... already.
