1.  Origin of the breed

“In the 19th century Russian dog-breeders adapted local spitz like dogs of Siberia through careful selection to gun hunting… the dog will find its prey and hold it, giving tongue and waiting for the hunter to come… it calm and well-balanced by nature.

New encyclopedia of dogs by B.Fogle. Moscow, Astrel, 2003

Bruce is true to himself, you can imagine that before the 19th century the people in Siberia hunted without dogs and all other laika breeds didn’t hold their prey before the hunter came, but pressed it at once and dragged straight into the car.

 Thus, East-Siberian laika!

Temporary standard for ESL was adopted in 1949. It was based on the description of Amur laika made by an expert in hunting K.G.Abramov (“Promyslovaya layka Priamuria” (Hunting laika of Amur region) Khabarovsk, 1940. 40 p.). Amur laika had a stretched body, strong build, excellent fur, broad and rough sculp. Local hunters used these dogs for furs hunting and  for transporting goods while hunting. In general  a stretched  body is characteristic of  transport dogs, while hunting dogs have a square one (like Russian-European laikas). Meanwhile not all peoples of Eastern Siberia harnessed the dogs, that’s why they had many which were nearly square. Before kennel was opened in Irkutsk  at the beginning of the 70s, nobody was engaged in dog breeding on a plant. Simultaneously people in Leningrad joined in. In 1979 39 dogs of this breed were registered in 4th volume of All-Russian Catalogue.
