Dog Mating

Dam mating is not a piece of cake

Expert dog breeder

A dam rarely «spreads» to a stud at once and without problems. There are many reasons for it: the dam doesn’t know the stud, or it may not be ready (it’s too early or too late), or it wasn’t mated for a long time (first we serviced 7 to 9 years old dams), or it simply may be “pissy”. But mating must be done… First, it’s necessary for the dam owner  to know exactly the date when the heat begins. Then he should count 9 days from this date, 9 to 14 days being the most appropriate time for mating.

For the first time we do mating on the 9th to 11th day, and for the second time (control mating), on the 12th to 14th day. The stud is given a rest for some two or three days. Control mating is considered to be necessary, as if the stud wasn’t mated for a long time, his sperm may be unviable. If the dam is strongly resistant on the first day (the 9th to 11th day of season), we make a one- or two day break and then make another try. Circumstantial factors are taken into account (no loop tumescence, blood-tinged discharge, dam’s violent resistance). On 11th to 14th day mating is made by force, although the dam might protest. To do this you should take a silk stocking, and tie the dam’s muzzle, after that dam owner holds the dam tightly by the collar, stud owner holding the dam under the belly not letting it sit down and helping the stud to mount. You should avoid touching the stud while mounting, though you may press the stud to the dam to make better locking. If locking didn’t take place, hold the dam with its bottom up for some five minutes. In a word, call us if you meet any problem, we have no problems.

Choosing a mating pair. Mating tales.

I am going to tell you a mating story. I am not going into detail or giving any niceties. All the characters are real, but their story is quite generalized, so don’t criticize me.

Ivan (no stud book)

A lad was born in a nice village in Belorussia in 1959, and Ivan was he named. Ivan grew up, and it was time for him to join the army. They threw a great farewell party, with guests from three neighboring villages. The party was a great success, with abundance of food and drink, crying women, upset girls and fighting men. Ivan served in infantry, he was serving honestly, no moaning and groaning – not as they do nowadays. It was time for demobbing. He put on all his badges and decorations – and rushed back to civilian life. On this great occasion his dad sold one of his cows and bought him velvet trousers. It was cool! Young girls were struck when they met him! Ivan didn’t feel like returning to the village, as life in the village was poor, and he came to his brothers who had just settled in a small town of Ilichevo near St. Petersburg. There was a club in the town, with its parties, and jolly-ups, and belly-rubs, and Ivan came there in his velvet trousers … to meet Lida. Ivan was happy – or next to. He lived in his father-in-law’s big house, he had a wife, and a son, and a popgun … but something was missing. Ivan was thinking a lot – and one pretty day he realized that he was short of a dog (he was also short of money, but these were trifles). Ivan took off his velvet trousers, sighed and without a bit of regret exchanged them for a puppy.

Chernysh (4580/ lre)

It was like this that a male Russio-European laika puppy Chernysh, black and skew board,  excellent exterior, field diplomas II and III for squirrels, owned by Ivan Flerko, appeared in our company. Chernysh's parents were famous, Shugar (L918) owned by G.Blinov, and Pul’ka (4274/lre) owned by S.Zhilkin. Don’t pay attention to Chernysh‘s diplomas, such was the time. The male was famous throughout the whole region. A queue for Ivan and his dog for hunting elks and boars was around during the whole season (and not only during the season, to be true). Well, a Russian man had never been law-abiding…

Razboy (7688/98)

It came time to find a fiancee for Chernysh, Rada (808/90) owned by A.Lebedev. Rada gave birth to puppies which were all given away. One of the puppies was taken by a bloke somewhere in Sestroretzk – a posh house with a great garden and the like behind a magnificent fence.  The bloke named the puppy Razboy (7688/98)… but the new owner didn’t care much about the dog, and at last it was stolen. The bloke took some cognac and got quiet… But Ivan liked a puppy a lot. Ivan is very straight-forward so he and Ludmila were looking for Razboy for 3 months. Kind-hearted people and friends tried to help them and… they have finally found him at a town, in the Savyshkin region. Male was very happy to see Ivan. Male was dirty, skinny, with broken tooth – you could see he was trying to run away. Ivan beat up Razboy’s owner and took Razboy from him. That’s how Razboy’s story started.

It was not worthless – searching for Razboy. They have the same character – dog is a lot like its owner or vice versa. Razboy was a stubborn, brave, tireless, vicious enough male with perfect exterior and wonderful hunting qualities. Razboy had but one fault: his slogan was – “Good game is dead game”. If you got the animal – here Razboy is, if not – you should wait for it as long as get one. Razboy was very tenacious. At the same time if you did get an animal you can’t take it away from Razboy.

Razboy bit through my hand three times while hunting, and I in my turn hit him on the muzzle with my fist, for he would know his place.. Such was our love … Our club in Petersburg underestimated Razboy and treated it fairly bad, at the exhibitions as well as at tests, all because of Ivan’s temper. So, Razboy would have gotten out of kinology, but  there happened the All-Russian Exhibition in Moscow where Bosia (Razboy) took the fourth place out of 40 or something like this in the eldest age group, after which our club loved the dog.

 Aksay (8580/03)

After military service I lived and worked in the Far North for a long time, and then returned to Petrsburg, opened a small office, began to work and so on. And I hunted sometimes. But something was missing. I was happy – but not absolutely happy. I lived in my father-in-law’s big house, I had a wife, and a son, and a daughter, and a popgun brought from the North … but something was missing. I was thinking a lot – and one pretty day I realized that I was short of a dog. And Ivan was sent to me by Lord. It was just the time when his dam Rina (Razboy’s daughter) was pregnant. I decided firmly to take a dog, and my beloved wife joked that Rina would give birth to five females (she didn’t want a dog). Rina gave birth to a puppy … it was female! But I was not going to stop! Razboy was mated with Norka  (833/90) owned by A.Vinogradov. Norka gave birth to, say, six puppies (I don’t remember the exact number). I came to see the puppies, and went to the kitchen to have some tea with the master, having left my military shoes in the hallway. The puppies had just been fed and were all sleeping in the kitchen, under the bench. We were having tea, the puppies were asleep, when a noise came the hallway. And we saw a puppy playing with my boots – he had already pulled out all the laces. It was Aksay!

See info about this dog in other sections, but I can’t say how wonderful it is!

Uma (owned by A.Lepehina, SPb)

At a time (August of 2009) Anna Vasilievna was 83.  The lady is not old at all, but she is grumbling: ”Oh, Dmitriy Yurievich! I got so old… Yesterday I took Umka and went for a squirrel, and it was my daughter who carried the gun because it’s too hard for me, but  we did get the squirrel».I lost all the words! I keep silence and I am all in admiration!

Uma is sturdy, broad-chested, fairly slim female with perfect build. And what ears, tail, pastern! It is unique at hunting furbearers: squirrels, martens, minks, lynx  (the wish of the owner), nobody can compete with us. She was mated with Aksay three times. Results can be the subject for another article.

Alya (owned by N.Sharko, Spb.)

Alya (Aliaska) was born from the first mating of Aksay with Uma. It is a tall, quiet, strict and smart female. She is a great mother and feels great both in a forest and with her family and guests. It is good at working at a boar or a bear in a run, it is not cheeky, but is very skilled at setting the beast. Unfortunately, hard times for forest hunting make it impossible to train the dog in the forest and estimate its hunting qualities. It was such a story when Alya got her puppies. Nikolay Ivanovich Sharko took her to an amazing male from in Yriev (Yaroslalvl). They discussed it for a long time, he had crossed the whole region and half of Russia. … finally they mated them. Puppies were born. I arrived in four days to take a look on whom did she gave birth to. I came in, took my coat off, come into the guest room … and Alya is bringing me a female right under my feet – here she is, everybody give I look whom I gave birth to!…That’s how Vjuga appeared.

Viuga (owned by N.Sharko, SPb)

There are dogs that you like from the first look. Viuga is just the case. Its story is not quite ordinary, and I’ll tell it another time. As it should be for a dog with such a winter name, Viuga is white. Sturdy-built, fairly slim, with perfect brisket, broad back, strong round paws, high front, ideal format. It is brave at working at a boar or a bear in a run, plus skilled at setting the beast. In the forest it is not cheeky. It behaves herself great with family members. Now she is a perfect mother. When mating Viuga we had such a puzzle. Look – it is the fourth generation after Razboy?! So we are waiting for another Razboy! But Uma’s father may also occur….  It is all about genetics. In our thought we had unfaithfully forgotten our ancestors from Yaroslavl, because it were Yaroslavl males that we  mated  Alya and Viuga with … The result will be great anyways! We’ll get to know about it in a couple of years. Well, Viuga was mated with U-Reks (owned by S.Mosin, Yaroslavl).

U-Reks (owned by S.Mosin, Yaroslavl).

Choosing a male for mating Viuga took a long time. The choice is always so uneasy and here we meet so many difficulties. Well, at last the right male was chosen. In time I’ll tell you about it.
